Born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in Sebastopol, California, Sasha Swedlund was immersed in art from a young age. Her mother collected fabrics from all over the world, and Swedlund developed a love of painting, prints, color, textiles, and fashion. Over the last decade, she has worked as a muralist and sign painter and, prior to attending FIDM, she earned her bachelor’s degree in fine art and participated in a prestigious study abroad program in Paris. Her FIDM Debut collection of elevated streetwear also has elements of afrofuturism, and she hand-painted all of the vibrantly colored custom textiles. Swedlund incorporated silhouettes inspired by natural hairstyles of Black women, such as afro puffs and bantu knots, in her collection.
